Cuffe call foul on untruthful billboards

News

The Green Party has called for a billboard campaign by an organisation entitled 'save8th.org' to be withdrawn. It said the ad campaign is misleading and untruthful and should be dropped. Councillor Ciarán Cuffe said: "Facts are often the first victim in political campaigning. It is regrettable that these billboards states that “In Britain’ “Limited” Abortion kills 1 in 5 Babies.” which is clearly an untruthful message. In addition the ads contain an image of a baby which is a misleading association. This suggests that fetuses or embryos are babies which is not the case in the vast majority of cases."I have made a formal complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland stating that the advertisement breaches the Code of Standards for Advertising, Promotional and Direct Marketing in Ireland and should be withdrawn. In addition I have written to Pzazz Media asking that they withdraw use of their billboards for this untruthful messaging."I hope that the forthcoming campaign to repeal the Eight Amendment to the Constitution concentrates on facts and does not succumb to fear-mongering or untruthful messages."ENDSNoteLink to Councillor's Cuffe's letter of complaint and billboard image belowhttp://bit.ly/ASAIcomplaintPress Release issued and this page created 4th February 2018
