Tuesday 11th November 2014, Dublin.Green Party councillors on Dublin City Council have hailed the success of securing a Cycle Liaison Officer for the city as a significant step towards creating the transport future that Dublin requires. The new position was proposed by Green councillors and was last night secured at Dublin City Council's 2015 Budget vote. The position of the Cycle Liaison Officer was a recommendation of the 2009 National Cycle Policy Framework, a document which drew on international best practice for designing and improving community cycle schemes. Dublin City Council allocated €43,000 for the position of Cycle Liaison Officer, and it is anticipated that the position will be filled within the next six months.Cllr Ciarán Cuffe, Chair of the Transport Strategic Policy Committee, said: "Securing a Cycle Liaison Officer was a major priority for the Greens on Dublin City Council. While we've come on in leaps-and-bounds in terms of getting people on bikes, our infrastructure lags far behind and is both dangerous and dysfunctional. Having a single person dedicated to improving the city for cyclists means major change can now be driven forward. All current and future cyclists will benefit from this move."I'm looking forward to working with the new Officer to push through some priority projects, and making sure that Dublin's authorities think of cycling and cyclists just as much as they think of cars, buses and trains. If we're going to keep attracting people to bike for their daily commute we're going to have to accelerate the pace of reform and put in the new cycle lanes and locking facilities we need, and improve the dangerous roads we already have."Improving our cycling infrastructure is a win-win for the city, and I'm delighted that Greens on the Council have secured a Cycle Liaison Officer for the exciting years ahead."ENDSChris GreenPress Officerpress@greenparty.ie+353 1 679 0012+353 86 661 0972Follow us @greenparty_ieENDS
