The Green Party today responded to Dublin City Council’s call for tenders for a private operator to restore and run the Fruit and Vegetable Market near Smithfield, Dublin 7, saying that the markets should be redeveloped as a destination in the City for the very best of Irish produce.
Green Party MEP for Dublin Ciarán Cuffe said:
“This is a matter that I worked very closely on for a number of years as a Dublin City Councillor. This move to commence refurbishment by Dublin City Council is to be welcomed, and is a culmination of years of work.
“However, it is absolutely crucial that the Markets do not become a tourist trap, full of fast food outlets. The successful tenderer, in collaboration with the Council, must develop a food market that showcases the very best of Irish food and drink, to be enjoyed by visitors to the City and Dubliners alike. I want to see Dublin City Council work closely with An Bord Bia to ensure that what is on offer in the refurbished Markets reflects the vibrant food culture we have in Dublin and beyond. There are many fantastic examples of vibrant food markets in cities across Europe, showcasing the best of local produce, let’s bring a taste of this to Dublin.”
