Greens repeats call for bikes parking at Dublin Papal Mass

News

The Green Party has repeated its call for cycling to be promoted for travel to and from the Pope's mass at the Phoenix Park this August.Ciarán Cuffe the Green Party Transport spokesperson said:"This is a golden opportunity to promote cycling at a time when streets will be free from car traffic. Instead the OPW is saying that 'bike parking facilities will not be available.' This is a significant own goal for both the OPW and An Garda Siochána and we are calling for them to reconsider their policy. "Bike parks at each entrance to the Phoenix park could accommodate thousands of pilgrims and take pressure off public transport, and would align with the policies outlined in the papal encyclical Laudata Si'. All it would take is some signage and traffic control barriers to create bike parks at these locations. This approach is commonplace in the Netherlands and elsewhere for public events."The papal events this Summer should be seen as an opportunity to promote Smarter Travel including walking and cycling, and we are calling for the traffic plans to be reconsidered."ENDS
