IPCC REPORT AN APOCALYPTIC WAKE-UP CALL FOR LAW-MAKERSCiarán Cuffe MEP has welcomed today’s publication by the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of their ‘Summary for Policymakers’. He commented:“This report is a wake-up call for all who have delayed in tackling climate change. In forty-one pages it sets out a stark picture of an apocalyptic future should we choose not to act. It reinforces the need for swift action to reduce emissions in all sectors. Coming on top of ongoing forest fires, and recent deadly floods around the world it must be a clarion call to action.“While reducing greenhouse gas emissions will not be easy, it is the only course we can take if we are to protect the world’s most vulnerable from tragedy. Reducing emissions can create jobs, as well as improve air quality. As Governments prepare for the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow in three months’ time, this report must focus our minds on action“Difficult choices lie ahead in implementing the cuts in emissions that are required. It will involve radical changes in agriculture, energy, transport and construction, but if done correctly there is huge potential to create employment and deliver on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.”ENDS.
