Keeping safe in an uncertain time

News

I’m writing to you from Stoneybatter in a world that has changed dramatically over the last few weeks. Just over three weeks ago, I was in Dublin Castle at a meeting of the European Youth Parliament, and people were puzzled when I declined to shake hands. Now we know that personal distancing is the norm.Meanwhile in Brussels the European Parliament Buildings are almost empty, and staff are working from home. Rather than meeting up in the same room, meetings are taking place by video-link, and we’re getting used to seeing our colleagues on a screen, with an occasional child or cat making an appearance. This is the new normal.Last Thursday a remote session of the European Parliament was convened with the 705 Members of Parliament participating remotely. We voted on emergency measures to tackle the Covid-19 outbreak at European level; financially assist countries in crisis; halt unnecessary flights and ensure that urgent medical supplies travel smoothly through the European Union. We also wanted to carefully ensure that the European Green Deal is not put to one side when we emerge from this period.Back in Ireland further emergency measures have been passed by the Oireachtas. The Green Party call for a National Unity Government during this crisis period has not gained the all Party support we hoped it would. We continue continue to support Government efforts to tackle the Covid-19 crisis during this interim period. All our elected representatives are working hard to make the best decisions for country at this critical time. These are really difficult times for everyone. So many are concerned about the health of their loved ones and are struggling to stay afloat at a time when many people are suddenly out of work. Staying informed is important, and it’s crucial to get your information from trusted sources. The HSE’s website is the best place to get information you need relating to Coronavirus https://www2.hse.ie/coronavirus/You can stay up to date with all developments on the Covid-19 pandemic in Ireland herehttps://covid19.shanehastings.eu/And here you can find a useful list of resources for all the family during this period of staying at home.https://covid19.shanehastings.eu/giveback/Do stay in touch with me, and if there are issues of concern that you come across, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at ciaran.cuffe@europarl.europa.euTake care of yourselves during these days and weeks, and remember, wash your hands!Ciarán CuffeMEP for Dublin
