The Green Party is calling on the Minister for Transport Shane Ross to accept the will of the Dáil and increase the funding for cycling to 10 per cent of the transport budget. At present it is estimated that less than two per cent of the transport budget goes to cycling.Today in the Dáil a Green Party amendment, which calls for 10 per cent of the transport budget to go to cycling, has passed. Ciarán Cuffe, Green Party Transport Spokesperson, said:“Committing 10 per cent of the transport budget to cycling is a realistic and achievable goal and Minister Ross should instruct his officials accordingly.“For far too long sustainable transport has received the crumbs of the transport cake. It is now time for Minister Ross to allocate staff and funding to walking and cycling in the numbers required to make a difference. This can improve safety on the roads and help us move towards our carbon reduction goals. In addition it will improve our health and well-being. Ross must deliver.”Issued 17th January 2019, Updated 5th February 2019
