Parliament right to deny “sustainable” label to palm oil, food crops as fuel, Green MEP says

News

Irish Green MEP Ciarán Cuffe has welcomed a European Parliament vote in favour of excluding palm oil by-products and some food crops from the definition of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs). MEP Cuffe proposed these exclusions in his amendments to the draft law “ReFuelEU Aviation”, submitted on behalf of the Greens/EFA group. MEP Cuffe is the lead negotiator for the Greens/EFA on this law. Today’s vote has decided Parliament’s position on the ReFuelEU Aviation draft law, and Parliament negotiators will now enter talks with EU member state representatives to agree a final legal text. Ciarán Cuffe, Irish Green MEP, said: “I welcome Parliament's decision to approve the Greens/EFA amendments to exclude the very worst feedstocks, like palm oil by-products and food crops, from being counted as "sustainable" aviation fuels. This is good news for forests, food security, and climate. We hope to make further improvements to the ReFuelEU Aviation text in negotiations with the Council." MEP Cuffe submitted further amendments to the ReFuelEU Aviation text which did not pass in the Parliament vote. These included a stricter SAFs definition, as originally proposed by the European Commission; higher targets for SAF use at EU airports, which would allow industry to better align with the Paris Climate Agreement; and a measure to include corporate flying within the scope of the draft law. MEP Cuffe is hopeful that talks on some of these topics will be renewed in the next stage of negotiations.
