Katinka Eikelenboom, President of GroenLinks said:
"Many Dutch green, left-wing, progressive, socialist, social-democratic voters are very concerned at what is happening in our country and in the world at the moment and are in favor of joining forces."
"We are committed to continue strengthening green, left-wing, and progressive politics in Europe”,
Gebke van Gaal, International Secretary of GroenLinks added.
The European Green Party welcomed the strengthening of the cooperation between GroenLinks and the PvdA. Ciarán Cuffe, co-chair of the European Green Party, said:
"At a time when far-right forces are gaining power around the world and in Europe, the cooperation between GroenLinks and the PvdA has been successful in forming a strong opposition to the Dutch far-right government. In these times of instability, when the very foundations of the European project are at stake, it’s more important than ever to build alliances among progressive political parties to continue to protect our freedoms and human rights and to fight against climate change and social inequalities.”
Vula Tsetsi, co-chair of the European Green Party, concluded:
"From city councils to national parliaments, to the European Parliament, thousands of Green representatives are working hard across Europe, to protect nature, equal rights, decent jobs for all, democracy and the rule of law, liveable cities and a welcoming and prosperous Europe. GroenLinks and the PvdA have strengthened their cooperation over the years and have been successful. It is now up to the members to explore and decide what form this alliance will take in the Netherlands in the future. Together we will continue to fight for a greener, fairer and more just Netherlands and Europe."
Background
GroenLinks (member of the European Green Party) and PvdA (member of the Party of European Socialists) started to work together to face the threat of the rise of the far-right PVV party of Geert Wilders (member of European political party Patriots.eu).
GroenLinks and PvdA contested the 2023 Dutch election as an alliance and finished second to the far-right PVV, but ahead of the governing liberal party VVD of former Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
As a joint list led by Greens/EFA Group Co-President Bas Eickhout, in the 2024 European Parliament election, GroenLinks-PvdA was also very successful, coming out as the biggest party with 21 percent of the votes, and 8 of the 31 Dutch seats in the European Parliament.
GroenLinks and PvdA also work together as the largest opposition force against the current Dutch government, composed of the far-right PVV, the liberal VVD (member of ALDE) and conservatives of NSC and BBB, sitting in the EPP group in the European Parliament.
