Prosecutions required on Tolka fish kills

Tolka at Botanic Gardens

The Green Party is today calling for an immediate investigation into the pollution of the Tolka River in Dublin that has led to hundreds of fish kills and contaminated in the stretch of river at Drumcondra's Griffith Park.Councillor Ciarán Cuffe, who represents Dublin’s North Inner City, said: "I have reported the incident to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Inland Fisheries Board and Council officials. I have urged them to take action to investigate and prosecute those responsible. I'm also calling on the EPA to take whatever action can be done to limit the impact of this incident on the river body. I walked the banks of the Tolka this afternoon between Griffith park and the Botanic gardens and saw hundereds of dead fish, and large patches of white foam on the surface of the river."Earlier this year we were celebrating the return of spawning salmon to the river after a one hundred year absence. It would be shameful if this incident destroys the painstaking work that has been undertaken to clean up the river."I am urging the EPA and Inland Fisheries to work swiftly with Dublin City Council and the Gardaí to tackle this incident, prosecute those responsible, and ensure it does not happen again."
